The workbook will be used for individual or group grief work. The historical, theological and biblical research will help to substantiate the need for such a book. The project will formulate the historical perspectives on suicide and will identify the spiritual issues that burden the bereaved. Proactive research will come from a case study, a support group survey, professional interviews and workbook evaluations already in existence. The researcher explores difficulties First United Presbyterian Church encountered getting a ministry to the economically disadvantaged established called Peter's Place. The project is based on the proposition that increased congregational awareness concerning poverty and homelessness would create greater support for the ministry among the church's membership. A series of Community Forums was held with different community advocates about poverty, unemployment and homelessness throughout Charlotte. Attitudes changed from passivity to activity, from apathy to passion and from lethargy to vitality. Age and race issues were resolved. Through a series of sermons and a seven-week study using the book 'Resident aliens', terms, concepts, and ideas were explored connecting the mission statement and discipleship. Administrative board and church members were invited to participate (22 participants). Since the project was implemented, our average Sunday morning attendance increased by twenty percent. The method utilized five focus congregations in which a questionnaire was completed and lengthy discussion of other relevant topics was held. In addition, discussion was pursued with individuals from the other fifty-six churches in the presbytery. The paper also incorporates some of the current thought regarding the role of middle governing bodies in a mainline tradition.
