The project gathered a group of pastors who: 1) identified their primary modality for receiving and processing information; 2) became aware of other modalities; and 3) attempted to compose and deliver sermons which addressed all three types of sensory dominance among the people of their congregations.  Neurolinguistic programming and modality strengths from the fields of therapy and education were the springboards for the overall dissertation. Three such theological presuppositions are isolated.  The five novels were read and discussed by a group of laypersons who had difficulty in perceiving Updike's theological intent.  The study concludes that while the works of Updike help provide meaning for preaching, they are no panacea for the preaching task. It also includes a project composed of four sermons by the writer, preached at Bethany Presbyterian Church, Portland, Oregon in Sept-Oct 1999, and evaluations of the sermons by members of a study group from the congregation.
