The historical development of the Roman Catholic tradition's sacramental theology as delineated in the Baltimore Catechism, Thomas Aquinas, and seminary manuals provides the basis for this overview of selected works from Vatican Council II, official post-conciliar documents, and theologians Edward Schillebeeckx, Karl Rahner, Johann Baptist Metz, and Juan Luis Segundo. The dissertation analyzes the five passages of the New Testament on the subject, reflects on centuries of Catholic practice and tradition, states current church law, presents the damage of folklore about divorce and remarriage, and describes support groups.
