While much discussion has taken place, insufficient theological reflection has occurred. In this project, the author encourages renewed reflection upon such issues as the mode and meaning of baptism, open or inclusive membership, re-baptism and baptismal unity. He pays particular attention to the World Council of Churches document, Baptism, Eucharist, and Ministry. The project provides biblical and historical research on Christian baptism, as well as current ecumenical dialogue. Contemporary baptismal theology and practice among Disciples are revealed by means of a survey consisting of both laity and clergy responses. It begins with a bibliographic essay of the literature in the last century. It moves to a focus on how the Bible is used in developing a theology of other religions. It then presents a Bible study, written for college students, which addresses the theological issues in understandable language. The Bible study was fieldpre-tested with twenty Students. Pre-test and postpre-test methodology, to determine whether any change in attitude resulted from the Bible study, showed negligible results."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["San Francisco Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["38714359-d032-4ed0-ae3f-cb82c8f65a92"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799719507888963584,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T02:51:11.408Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T23:02:39Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T02:53:08Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"e3b96916-c227-472a-bf29-5740c8161cc9","accessControl_ssim":["06915dbd-3573-4021-a231-a5e3c52c06dd"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Discerning thmogical dimensions in the fiction of John Updike: a tool for aiding hermeneutical interpretation in the local congregation"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T23:02:38Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:38:41Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["58c74c9f-5b3a-4c57-a9b0-6c34a9827229"],"hasLease_ssim":["9039a08e-9d99-4cd1-8a81-80a7d78ff1d6"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["San Francisco Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Deborah P Hilty"],"year_tesim":["1986"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["J Robert Keever"],"publisher_tesim":["San Francisco Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Bible--Homiletic use","Narrative theology","Religion and literature","Narration (Rhetoric)","Preaching--Study and teaching","Updike, John, 1932-2009"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This study is an effort to explore the use of story inpp_eaching by examining theological dimensions in five novels of John Updike. Three such theological presuppositions are isolated. The five novels were read and discussed by a group of laypersons who had difficulty in perceiving Updike's theological intent. The study concludes that while the works of Updike help provide meaning for preaching, they are no panacea for the preaching task.
