The author gathered data from biblical, theological, sociological, and psychological sources in order to design a training manual for training local church volunteers to minister as grief counselors.  Volunteers were selected by their minister and trained to understand the dynamics of grief, to counsel, and to make referrals when their counseling skills were limited.  Part I explains the dynamics of grief.  Part II presents the training manual. Theological reflection analyzes ministry in a secular society and is illustrated by pen pictures and case studies. After a review of biblical, theological, and psychological literature, the lay board members of six selected churches were surveyed for demographic information, opinions regarding volunteerism, and theological beliefs. The pastors of those six churches were personally interviewed regarding the same items. The study concentrates on finding the basic needs of families by way of a community survey.  The findings of the survey resulted in the development of several possible responses a local church can make in meeting the needs of families. To reach out effectively it was discovered that people within the church needed to be equipped to do the work of ministry. The purpose of this project is to develop a resource guide to enable mutual ministry within the home.  From this study there emerges a strong tradition of family ministry and nurture to which the project intends to make a contribution.
