To achieve this goal, an alliance was formed and participants were engaged in unified multi-denominational and multi-cultural ministries such as prayer services, social gatherings and worship services.  Together the practicing churches took the presence of God into the community in the form of practical ministry: cleanup, vacation Bible school, and worship service in a city park. There will be added support data from two surveys taken in the South Indiana Conference of the United Methodist Church. It also demonstrates the value of a district plan to provide planning consultations as a resource to the churches. The judicatory executive, in this case the district superintendent, is a catalyst in bringing small membership churches to use a planning process to direct their ministry. The churches in the project planned new ministries for the coming year. The district superintendent is a key catalyst in the model.  This document is part of a larger design in which the district superintendency is the bonding agent of denominational vitalization.  The model consists of three district events designed for small membership congregations: confirmation retreat; Sunday school workshop and rally; and mission project in Haiti. All three events were designed by laity and clergy persons from small membership churches in the district with assistance from district and conference staff persons. This methodology was entered into after all other possibilities were deemed unsuitable.  It is a pattern of using a regular rotation of lay speakers and has lasted for four years. Two churches, while maintaining their independence, have been drawn together in mission to the community through joint programs of nurture and outreach, and administratively through the organization of a parish council.
