The hypothesis was that through the Sunday school program, families could be better equipped to do faith development in the home. New curriculum choices, teacher training and parent resources were introduced to accomplish this goal. Pre- and post-testing of the parents in the church showed that the research project did provide the parents the resources needed to continue the Sunday school lessons at home. It sought through tutelage to improve the cognitive skills of young African American males.  The Sunday school period provided the modus for implementing this module.  The methodology was to pair mentors with pupils, teaching Bible-based principles combined with an analysis of successful African American personalities. African American professional and business persons were also invited to address the group. A model for a new ministry role, the Sunday School Shepherd, was developed and implemented at First United Methodist Church of Silsbee, Texas. Appropriate training and encouragement were given. Participants in the Shepherd ministry found the training useful and were able to function in valuable ways within their class structures.
