We studied three traditional responses that have been made at various intervals to the problem of evil, that of Leibniz, Augustine, and Calvin, the thought of Walter Kaufmann on the problem of evil, and three non-traditional responses to the problem made by Spinoza, Schleiermacher, Unamuno, and David Ray Griffin. In a ten week study group we addressed the philosophical problem of evil with a group of interested laypersons. Our argument was that traditional and popular attributes of divine omnipotence, omniscience, and moral perfection ought to be modified or altered in order that intelligent, perceptive, and sensitive church members would have fewer problems of guilt and fewer intellectual problems in their encounters with empirical evil and suffering."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["5a6e4a36-5801-4bff-8e61-86d7489efb4a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799716672888635392,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T02:06:07.741Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:58:45Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T03:26:14Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"c00a3c14-0b63-44df-9669-416f43383933","accessControl_ssim":["2b1cc1fd-ea32-4758-bed6-b9eb9db02ffc"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Creating liturgy design teams for the local parish: a model for lay involvement in the planning of worship at Dumbarton United Methodist Church"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:58:44Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:39:30Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["0b82220b-5aab-46e3-ab87-2522e8c550f1"],"hasLease_ssim":["6e64aa07-25db-4b91-b112-c8864c50b529"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Laurence Hull Stookey"],"year_tesim":["1982"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. The pastor met with fifteen parishioners during the season of Lent in order to prepare liturgies for the Second Sunday in Easter, Ascension Sunday, and Pentecost Sunday. The study discusses what worked and what did not work and then proposes a new model. What began as a study of lay participation in liturgy planning, ended up with some useful insights into the role of the pastor in the congregation. A number of issues relating to pastoral function and identity as well as the priesthood of believers are raised in the final chapter. In a church where there is a high degree of lay involvement, what is the unique role of the ordained minister? which roles can be shared in liturgical ministry and which roles cannot be shared?"],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["5a6e4a36-5801-4bff-8e61-86d7489efb4a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799721713933484032,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T03:26:15.257Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:58:15Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T02:32:55Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"1e8b8ab9-e7c0-4846-9807-246e5409949a","accessControl_ssim":["0e0e5fd2-5464-4fbf-bc93-24a13dabc76d"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Synodical authority and congregational diversity in the Christian Reformed Church"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:58:15Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T23:02:06Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["77191bee-e710-4ed0-8636-99300f45389d"],"hasLease_ssim":["6f486470-b61a-45a4-a5e1-d12d90cb522a"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Clarence Curtis Goen"],"year_tesim":["1982"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. Each session included Bible study, class exercises, the use of student journals, and assigned tasks to be accomplished between class sessions. The course introduced the concept of transition moments as life situations requiring decisions, identified examples of those experiences in a midshipman's career, and related the Christian gospel to those moments as a resource for personal and spiritual growth. A student evaluation of the course indicated that the concept of transition moments was understood and applied to personal experiences within the brigade. Further, the evaluation suggested that once having identified transition moments in their daily routines, midshipmen valued the scriptural material as potential resource for information."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["5a6e4a36-5801-4bff-8e61-86d7489efb4a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791127156099645441,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T06:39:26.190Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:57:45Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T02:12:23Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"0ab729ea-4560-4445-a3a0-395a99606717","accessControl_ssim":["8bdc04f6-1665-48d5-a6d9-ba58042f3dff"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Towards a theology of worship from a free church perspective"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:57:44Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T22:25:07Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["57812b50-9b39-44ba-a7e9-fa566f5c7f32"],"hasLease_ssim":["aaed6105-92ca-407e-93ed-f4162b20c116"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["James C Logan"],"year_tesim":["1982"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. With few exceptions, Baptist theological studies have largely ignored it. The lingering shadows of revivalism have left most Baptists without 'a sense of the liturgical' and with a fear of anything that feels formal. Differences in liturgical practices exist between different groups of Baptists, and distinctions can be made between British Baptists and Baptists in America and between American and Southern Baptists. As early as the eighteenth century there were Baptists who contended against the dangers of subjectivism. Baptists' free church tradition moreover is not without a liturgical and theological perspective necessary for the development of 'a sense of the liturgical.' the work of P. T. Forsyth, for instance, demonstrates what can be done with worship in the free church tradition. The best hope for liturgical renewal lies in a historical-theological perspective. The implication is pastoral counselors cannot make personality diagnosis nor can they do therapy based on the client's sex, age or sense of religiosity."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["5a6e4a36-5801-4bff-8e61-86d7489efb4a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799721309005938688,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T03:19:49.088Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:57:44Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T02:17:50Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"340f4727-dd94-4b66-98e8-cf004fa09ded","accessControl_ssim":["18265d57-5834-4dcb-b024-428ebafde7de"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["The role of spiritual values in the recovery of alcoholics"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:57:43Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T23:38:27Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["1925fb65-9d99-465f-b8e3-bac956de0bd2"],"hasLease_ssim":["878bc734-68ef-44f6-9403-cfcc77f43a02"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Tibor Chikes"],"year_tesim":["1982"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. The disease is examined in the context of a theological anthropology based on process theology. The alcoholic responds to the call to wholeness in the radical, healing relationship of prayer. The project explores 1) the role of spiritual values in the recovery of alcoholics in a 28-day residential treatment program, and 2) the comparative length of sobriety reported after three months. The results are: 1) the experimental group showed increases in spiritual consciousness and practice; 2) the control group showed no significant level of difference in spiritual practice at t2 or t3 point although this group showed significant change in spiritual consciousness at both points when compared with t1; 3) the experimental group reported a longer length of sobriety. The implications of the study include: the need for spiritual ministry for alcoholics in recovery; the value of treating the person as a whole; the minister has a role on the health care team as a fellow professional."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["5a6e4a36-5801-4bff-8e61-86d7489efb4a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799717410656223232,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T02:17:51.331Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"D.Min.
