The author contends that the Catholic Church underwent a substantive change in the last forty years in how it responded in Guatemala. Japanese view Christianity as a foreign, disjunctive religion.  Just as Japan historically syncretized Buddhism and Confucianism, Japanese experience a cultural conversion to Roman Catholicism that inculturates Japanese religiosity into a specifically Japanese Catholicism.  Overcoming difficulties of syncretizing, or bringing together a new tradition and a distinctly Japanese culture of religiosity, becomes paramount if a Japanese Christian Church is to thrive. The mission of the Catholic Church is to promote humanization, i.e. to promote the development of humankind's innate potential for loving relationships.  The Church could be much more effective. Object relations theory concepts of true versus false self can help to evaluate the effectiveness of Church ministry. The true self seeks loving relationships; the false self avoids them out of fear.  Church teachings and discipline often promotes the false self. It describes how alcoholism is a shared disease, affecting not only the identified alcoholics but also the systems to which they belong. Using family systems theory, the study suggests parallels between family and church.  It shows that just as a family in the process of maintaining stability incorporates dysfunctional behavior, so too does the church. The project offers a theology of ministry and a methodology for enabling the parish community to claim its ministry in the world and in the church.  Recorded interviews with staff members and those who share in the various ministries provide the foundation for the analysis. As a result, 'Roman' diocesan structures are being replaced by more collaborative structures.  This study uses Noel Tichy's strategic rope model to examine the ramifications of such reorganizations.  It asserts that a staff development program must accompany reorganization if resistance is to be overcome and behavior changed.  The project links narrative theology to case studies.  A program emerges that fosters identity redefinition.  The program uses traditional third party cases and the case method proposed by organizational theorist Chris Argyris.  It integrates these into a format for theological reflection.  The appendices provide detailed planning and implementation
