Guided imagery prayer can heal the shame women feel. The process used was a spiritual retreat for women. They were led in guided imagery meditations of four healing stories of Jesus: the healing of the bent-over woman (Luke 13:10-17); the healing of Jairus' daughter (Mark 5:21-24a,35-43); the woman who had been bleeding for twelve years (Mark 5:24-34); and the woman at the well (John 4:4-30). After each exercise they participated in a discussion about their experience. The retreat was a positive experience for each woman. Some of them felt healing that day. Few of them continued to use the meditations by themselves after the retreat. Shame can be healed through guided imagery prayer."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["63ab0f5c-c5fb-460c-b8ba-dd2fd91f7145"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791133029740052480,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:12:47.730Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T03:35:31Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:31:03Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"ebc14f96-28fc-4ff1-825f-602f819a66c3","accessControl_ssim":["39c2a896-6262-40bb-a158-bff57a082eaa"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Coming to know God: Roman Catholic women remember their experiences of God"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T03:35:21Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:52:02Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["2b225526-1fb7-4bcf-b494-c0caafcb456f"],"hasLease_ssim":["35793f4e-8743-4d8e-aa11-d7ec5254678b"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"advisor_tesim":["Julieanne S Hallman"],"year_tesim":["1994"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Ann-Marie Houghton"],"publisher_tesim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"subject_tesim":["Catholic women","Women--Religious life"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This doctoral project listens to women's stories of God, reflects on these stories from the epistemological model developed in Women's Ways of Knowing, and considers some of the implications for pastoral ministry in the Roman Catholic Church. This thesis maintains that women meet God in the ordinary experiences of daily living and that these encounters are often overlooked, ignored, or diminished. Fifty-eight memories of God from childhood through adulthood are recorded in the women's own voices. Making the connections between the various patriarchal structures of oppression is the work of transformation. This project/thesis focuses particularly on classism, racism, heterosexism and sexism. The author's personal struggle for liberation from the androcentrism and patriarchy of the Roman Catholic Church is the context of this thesis. The work of several women-church groups and Elisabeth Schussler Fiorenza's reconstruction of early Christian history reveal elements of transformation which can assist women attempting to engage in the struggle for transformation. Elisabeth Schussler Fiorenza's understanding of patriarchy and androcentrism provides the analytical tools for the work of transformation.
