This thesis project will propose a theory of emotional bonding based on the work of selected contemporary psychologists, and will apply that theory by means of a series of preaching tools. Finally, the theory will be tested by means of a workshop developed for deaconate candidates. Chapters One and Two addressed the theory of emotion and the understanding of the emotional bonding process. Chapters Three and Four define and explain how metaphor, illustration, storytelling, self-disclosure, and humor work individually and collectively to create emotional bonding between preacher and congregation. These two chapters explore the value and relevancy of these methods to the homiletic process. In Chapter Five the elements discussed in Chapters One-Four are integrated within the context of the deacons' workshop. This chapter demonstrates how the techniques available, as well as the emotional bonding theory, can assist the preacher in creating a homily, which can appeal to the cognitive and emotional needs of the listener."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Aquinas Institute of Theology"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["416f1c5f-a1c7-4596-b214-83b6abadee9c"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791129934487355392,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:23:35.867Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T20:09:34Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:30:53Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"e5351e93-4ae5-44df-8058-fa6de32c52a5","accessControl_ssim":["c28d270d-c7dd-4478-b660-7a586c154323"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["The self-image of the Lutheran preacher and its influence on law/gospel proclamation"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T20:09:33Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:41:23Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["3f79ca70-d257-486d-818a-3ad1e253b431"],"hasLease_ssim":["c5fd887e-c777-4eba-a575-6e2970b7c2c2"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Aquinas Institute of Theology"],"advisor_tesim":["Richard A Peddicord"],"year_tesim":["2000"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["David P Mulder"],"publisher_tesim":["Aquinas Institute of Theology"],"subject_tesim":["Lutheran preaching"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This project investigates the extent to which the goal of Lutheran preaching is further realized when the preacher adopts the self-image of representing Christ the bridegroom to the church, Christ's bride. Four pastors took part in one-day preaching workshop in which the importance of the preacher's self-image was introduced and explained. This project consists of academic research coupled with qualitative research data collected from workshops and interviews with pastoral care professionals from the Caribbean. Because there was insufficient scholarship available to conclusively make a direct link between slavery and the current subsequent behavior of Caribbean people, the author subsequently resorted to describing the oppression and its root causes, as it relates to slavery and colonialism and its resulting effects on the progeny of the slaves in the Caribbean. The thesis statement is: Preachers become more integrated and more authentic and effective as preachers of the word by engaging in a communal theological reflection process that is based on experience in dialogue with the Christian tradition regarding embodiment. Academic research includes theological anthropology, biblical studies, feminist theological anthropology, and mercy charism. Qualitative and kinesthetic research include personal experience of energy work and the results of a communal theological reflection series with an ecumenical group of women preachers. the project integrates academic, qualitative, and kinesthetic research into a theology of embodied preaching.
