Formerly trained assistants were provided an opportunity to learn the role and skills necessary to become directors as they developed an individual retreat. The retreat itself consisted of common prayer, meals, work time, personal reflection and small group sharing. Pedagogical emphasis was on theology, biblical exegesis, spiritual conflict, and the presence of God through the Holy Spirit. Participants completed a full one-day retreat which included lectures, participative exercises, spiritual disciplines such as formational prayer, and Lectio Divina. Pre and post tests were given to measure the results. The results of the data revealed increased movement in the participants' self-esteem. Further positive measurement evidenced a desire for Christian fellowship and a deeper relationship with God. A survey to measure the response of participants to that presentation was administered and the results of that survey tabulated. As a result, the evaluation by the panel of experts validated the strategy according to issues that revitalize a local church. A quesionnaire was used to ascertain the degree to which pastors and lay leaders depend on the Spirit. While today's leadership lacks a full understanding of the Holy Spirit, there appears to be a growing openness to explore the depths of this seemingly neglected, but equally authoritative part of the Trinity. The data were collected and analyzed from three workshops conducted to evaluate the pre and post understanding of participants pertaining to incarceration. As a result, participants reported an increased sensitivity to God's self-communication through deeper listening in scripture and prayer.
