The researcher studied the biblical and theological natures of care and community and their interconnectedness to each other. He used qualitative research to conduct case studies of Ada Bible Church and North Point Community Church to identify transferable principles. Because the emphasis of their education and practice is on the needs of their patients and families, these students often have little time to reflect on the profound theological questions that suffering evokes.  This project addresses the concern that in the process of dealing with profound suffering in their patients, nursing students do not receive adequate support for their own spiritual formation.  Using phenomenological methodology, eleven senior baccalaureate nursing students were interviewed about their experiences with patients who were suffering.  The results of the interviews were analyzed, and four themes emerged: the importance of preparation, the need to acknowledge the reality of the situation, the significance of obtaining support, and the necessity of self care.
