Training adults in lay pastoral care is an area of need within the church in order to increase the quantity and quality of Christian caring.  The primary objectives of this project are to recruit church members and train them in lay pastoral care in a series of six sessions over a six week period. The group was conducted through the Samaritan Pastoral Counseling Center of Nacogdoches, Texas, for a period of seven weeks.  Twelve people chose to participate in the group led by the writer.  Presentations were also made by a pastoral counselor and clinical psychologist. Each session included an opportunity for group members to share their problems with one another. This project was an effort to structure such a dialogue within the context of a sound doctrine of ministry.  A theology of ministry was developed and shared in a series of sermons and children's messages.  Dialogues were held to discuss the implications.  The congregation was surveyed before and after the sermon-dialogue series to detect any changes of attitude. Shalom is defined in its usage as a biblical, theological, and homiletical motif.  Ten key points are offered for preaching shalom to Congregations of Civility without the preacher becoming alienated from such congregations. Preaching the stories of shalom is then examined as an effective means of fulfilling these ten key points, and four sample sermons are offered which incorporate this technique. The author uses the metaphor of The Journey to the West, a popular Chinese classic novel, which is analogous to the current situation and perceptions of many Chinese immigrants searching for a better future in life in the United States. He integrates two primary elements as the foundational models of pastoral care:  Jürgen Moltmann's Theology of Hope provides the underlying basis, with Andrew Lester's concept of Hope and Future as a major factor in this thesis. This project set forth an effective pastoral couseling method to address and decrease depressive symptoms. African-American women's spirituality, and Womanist theology provided the framework for this process.  Biblical stories and cognitive/behavioral techniques, integrated with intentionally 'joining' the client, informed the pastoral counseling sessions. Research involved Aaron Beck's Depression inventory as a pre- and post-indicator of depressive symptoms, with five women participating in ifive counseling sessions.
