The decisions that a church makes are rooted in this identity. Any exploration of church identity begins with an examination of how people understand the nature and mission of the local church. This thesis will explore how the act of preaching plays a vital role in the development of a church's identity, both individually and collectively. It is difficult enough for a local church pastor to create emotional connections in preaching. Those connections become more difficult if the preacher does not know the congregation, but is a judicatory official or other outsider related to the congregation through ecclesiastical structure.  Narrative sermonic design provides an effective method for making emotional connections. The author explores this conclusion with a preaching project that used input from members to help him prepare sermons anchored by stories and images. Group interviews following these sermons explored whether hearers reflected more deeply on the sermon and its implications for behavior. To explore this situation 'when worlds collide,' three groups within a UCC congregation responded to several narrative sermons. One group participated in sermon preparation discussions lasting several hours. Another attended a pre-worship Bible study on the text. The third heard the sermon in worship. Just as esprit de corps, in the military, unites diverse individuals into cohesive organizations so, such preaching on the Holy Spirit effectively forms Christian community. Research included an investigation of acting techniques, observation of videotaped sermons, engagement with a Parish Project Group who assisted in the preparation and critique of sermons, and feedback achieved through questionnaires and group discussions. The psycho-physical nature of public performance can be described by four terms--atmosphere, connection, concentration, radiation.
