This ethnographic study focused on what motivates congregational lay leaders to bring high levels of commitment to their service in the church and community.  Eight lay leaders were interviewed,  Nineteen motivational factors were identified. The author initially supports the practice's legitimacy by describing spiritual direction and offering an historical review of its evolution since the fourth century.  The connection between Scripture and spiritual direction is explored to further encourage Protestants to practice spiritual direction.  A theological perspective of spiritual direction is proposed, specifically regarding the doctrines of God, revelation, and the Holy Spirit.  The last chapter discusses spiritual direction's relationship with evangelicals, gen-Xers, and pastors.
