This project explores how a congregation of today might recover the catechumenate, a dynamic pattern of catechesis and formation that accompanies baptism and profession of faith for adults. Because this ministry depends on both laity and clergy participation, a model proposed by Daniel Benedict is used with current members of a local congregation in order to experience the shape and feel of such a ministry. The basic idea is that baptism represents a paradigm shift from culture to the Kingdom of God. Addiction is a paradigm -- a world-forming power. Recovery is a paradigm shift also.  There are many similarities between the Kingdom of God and recovery paradigms.  The method is researched from a Wesleyan quadrilateral approach. A hypothesis that the use of singular or plural pronouns in corporate prayer would effect the degree to which the participant experienced forgiveness was tested.  A questionnaire developed by James Emerson, and modified for this study, was used to collect data.  The research suggests the need for a rite of passage for persons who make a public profession of faith and become members of the church.
