For those of us rooted in the Christian tradition, following Christ means offering mercy and kindness to others. It means seeking to understand the world around us so as to recognize the places where God longs to be made known. A transformative potential lies within all short-term mission and service-learning events. To tap that potential we must listen to the wise voices of those have served before us and to the Holy Spirit that leads us into transformative relationships. This project explores the works of several researchers and scholars who identify the potential outcomes of service-learning and short-term mission, and those interested in the transformational effects of such experiences. This project makes an attempt to identify some of these challenges. It also offers strategies and methods to meet the difficulties. This paper explores factors that contribute to stagnation and transition of a community of faith. Factors as racial, historical, ethnic, and biblical/theological perspectives are components of developing a tactic toward change. The project explores texts on preaching to determine the degree to which they see transformation as the purpose of preaching.  Walter Brueggemann and Walter Wink offer insight into what transformation means and how it comes about. Transformative preaching seeks to help the listener move from the destroying way of dominant cultural values to the giving way of covenant rooted in neighbor love.  The preacher evokes transformation with Scriptural images that offer alternative visions of how life can be lived faithfully and meaningfully.  The project develops a model for preaching that will aid in the transformative work of pastoral ministry, and demonstrates this model in three sermons.
