Throughout Christian history, we can say that some sacrificial deaths, those that derive from love of both God and others, bear fruit. This study aims to examine how such deaths resulted in the expansion of Christian mission by surveying the legacies of four missionaries from four Presbyterian churches who died suddenly in the line of duty. Those missionaries are John W. Heron of the Presbyterian Church in the United States of America, Lottie Witherspoon Bell of the Presbyterian Church of the United States, William J. McKenzie of the Presbyterian Church of Canada, and Joseph Henry Davies of the Presbyterian Church of Victoria, Australia.I will briefly ascertain the afore-mentioned missionaries' motivations for mission to Korea, and the process that carried them from the start to the end of their mission. Then, I will focus on the interplay between their deaths and their influence in both Korean Christianity and Western Christianities as a case study in World Christianity by investigating the activities of remaining family members, colleagues, natives, and their home churches. In order to clarify why their deaths had such a deep impact, I will particularly delve into the influence of deaths as a social phenomenon through the theology of premillennialism to which Western missionaries subscribed. The time period of focus for this study is from 1865, the year the Civil War in the United States ended, to 1912, the year the Korean Church dispatched its first cross-cultural missionary to China."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["b5eba5c2-141b-4673-9689-2f9720736859"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791127466836754432,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T06:44:22.532Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T15:18:10Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:22:56Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"fec768e3-6e09-4b9a-b3fc-cdeaf0217352","accessControl_ssim":["0dbf9082-3e54-4aa9-936b-adb9fd9b1785"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Collaborative ministry: a model for the church and community"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T15:18:09Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T05:24:49Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["1c25d957-4ea6-4c54-a384-8532e0d26a3e"],"hasLease_ssim":["7a82f3f5-f535-4842-9dd2-48c8173c55c9"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Marcia Y Riggs"],"year_tesim":["2013"],"location_tesim":["Georgia--Decatur County"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Gerald F Richardson"],"publisher_tesim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Cooperative Church work","Church history","Church work with people experiencing homelessness","Decatur Cooperative Church work (Decatur, Ga)","Church and social problems"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This project proposes that collaborative ministry is an effective way of addressing social problems such as homelessness and hunger in the community. This project contends that Christian blessings can be given in a traditional Hawaiian form that would enable believers to connect with unchurched friends and neighbors and thereby proclaim the blessing that is the Gospel of Jesus Christ. It was found that in the experience of the volunteers, giving blessing opens up deeper discussions with coworkers, friends and neighbors and that such discussions can and do lead to sharing the good news of God's blessing. This project uses a qualitative, pro-active approach with an interpretivistic worldview (with some premodern tinges)."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["b5eba5c2-141b-4673-9689-2f9720736859"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791128662632824832,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:03:22.932Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T11:07:53Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:07:06Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"974c351c-f0fd-4e3a-a200-822ddd356be1","accessControl_ssim":["4f35b2cc-b13a-4249-9a6a-5ed909e3b26d"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["The influence of the African American Christian experience on the Evangelical Covenant Church"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T11:07:52Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T02:33:15Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["44fd9bdc-554d-4ede-83ae-4b379933aed4"],"hasLease_ssim":["da276780-05e0-4b18-8cda-db2abad1a470"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Charles E Raynal"],"year_tesim":["2007"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Robert L Owens"],"keyword_tesim":["Religious surveys"],"publisher_tesim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["African Americans","Church history","Evangelical Covenant Church"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This paper seeks to determine the extent to which the African American Christian experience has influenced the ministry of the Evangelical Covenant Church (ECC). To measure the African Americans' influence in the Evangelical Covenant Church in the areas of worship, preaching, and social action, three survey instruments were designed and implemented. The worship survey was conducted among fifteen worship leaders. This group was chosen because they represent a cross-section of the denomination at large. The preaching survey was distributed to twenty-eight covenant preachers. This group was chosen based on this writer's knowledge of their ministry setting. The social action survey was designed to assess the African American social action influence. This survey was administered to six associate superintendents, three directors of church planting, and four superintendents, representing the eleven conference regions that comprise the Evangelical Covenant Church. This group was chosen because these individuals overseer more than 760 churches in the United States and Canada. This study will show how that The African American Christian influence is responsible for an expanding array of ministries at larger gatherings of the ECC and in local congregations. The data findings of this report supports the assumption that preaching in local congregations has a social focus, and that many congregations are moving toward a new consciousness that lives out their faith in word and practice."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["b5eba5c2-141b-4673-9689-2f9720736859"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791128899608903680,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:07:08.929Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T11:05:45Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:03:33Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"7db2261e-6ae2-4cf8-a631-120a42578e8c","accessControl_ssim":["64e3ca76-fdbf-4731-9057-4d7c64e43f28"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Mississippi Missionary people: a study of missio Dei in six New Church developments"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T11:05:44Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T01:50:41Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["21b759d5-c35c-4e02-ab7a-53991bc608da"],"hasLease_ssim":["e76ae3f4-3a40-4e0b-806c-5ad7f95f4757"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["H Stanley Wood"],"year_tesim":["2007"],"location_tesim":["Mississippi"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Kurt T Appel"],"publisher_tesim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Church history","Missions","United Methodist Church","Church development, New"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This project considers what role the theological paradigm of missio Dei played in the planting and early stages of six New Church developments in the Mississippi Annual Conference (MAC) of the United Methodist Church. This mission of God, or missio Dei, is reflected in Jesus' Great Commission for his disciples to go and make other disciples.  The launching of new churches needs to reflect this mandate for evangelism and be an expression of God's own missionary nature.  In this report is a case study of three larger membership Presbyterian churches in Dallas, Texas, whose launches reveal some common markers discovered through historical resources and interviews with the founders.  Larger membership churches have particular gifts for launching larger membership new church developments (NCD's).  This legacy encourages the launch of another larger membership NCD after contemporary adjustments are made to the missiology of these previous styles of NCD. Then, using Percept data an analysis is made that will show how Frisco, Texas, north of Dallas, is a likely place for the next larger membership NCD.  This idea has been tested in a public presentation and from it shows how an NCD in Frisco can be an expression of God's missionary nature."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["b5eba5c2-141b-4673-9689-2f9720736859"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791129065146548224,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:09:46.799Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":23,"label":"Unknown"}],"label":"Resource Type"},{"name":"creator_sim","items":[{"value":"Andrew Ritchie","hits":1,"label":"Andrew Ritchie"},{"value":"Dameon A Black","hits":1,"label":"Dameon A Black"},{"value":"Donald Yates Gordon","hits":1,"label":"Donald Yates Gordon"},{"value":"Emmanuel C Bwatta","hits":1,"label":"Emmanuel C Bwatta"},{"value":"Gary M Stevens","hits":1,"label":"Gary M Stevens"},{"value":"Gerald F Richardson","hits":1,"label":"Gerald F Richardson"}],"label":"Creator Sim"},{"name":"contributor_sim","items":[],"label":"Contributor"},{"name":"keyword_sim","items":[{"value":"Relation (Theology)","hits":2,"label":"Relation (Theology)"},{"value":"Congregations--Internal conflict","hits":1,"label":"Congregations--Internal conflict"},{"value":"Establishment and disestablishment","hits":1,"label":"Establishment and disestablishment"},{"value":"Family systems theory","hits":1,"label":"Family systems theory"},{"value":"Religious surveys","hits":1,"label":"Religious surveys"}],"label":"Keyword"},{"name":"subject_sim","items":[{"value":"Church history","hits":23,"label":"Church history"},{"value":"Missions","hits":4,"label":"Missions"},{"value":"Church development, New","hits":3,"label":"Church development, New"},{"value":"Race relations","hits":3,"label":"Race relations"},{"value":"African Americans","hits":2,"label":"African Americans"},{"value":"Christianity and culture","hits":2,"label":"Christianity and culture"}],"label":"Subject"},{"name":"location_sim","items":[{"value":"United States","hits":5,"label":"United States"},{"value":"Jamaica","hits":2,"label":"Jamaica"},{"value":"North Carolina","hits":2,"label":"North Carolina"},{"value":"California--Los Angeles","hits":1,"label":"California--Los Angeles"},{"value":"Cameroon","hits":1,"label":"Cameroon"},{"value":"Georgia","hits":1,"label":"Georgia"}],"label":"Location"},{"name":"language_sim","items":[{"value":"English","hits":23,"label":"English"}],"label":"Language"},{"name":"publisher_sim","items":[{"value":"Columbia Theological Seminary","hits":23,"label":"Columbia Theological Seminary"}],"label":"Publisher"},{"name":"date_created_sim","items":[],"label":"Date Created"},{"name":"types_sim","items":[{"value":"Text","hits":23,"label":"Text"}],"label":"Type"},{"name":"year_sim","items":[{"value":"2007","hits":4,"label":"2007"},{"value":"2003","hits":3,"label":"2003"},{"value":"1997","hits":2,"label":"1997"},{"value":"1999","hits":2,"label":"1999"},{"value":"2002","hits":2,"label":"2002"},{"value":"2017","hits":2,"label":"2017"}],"label":"Year"},{"name":"format_sim","items":[],"label":"Format"},{"name":"member_of_collections_ssim","items":[{"value":"Columbia Theological Seminary","hits":23,"label":"Columbia Theological Seminary"}],"label":"Collections"},{"name":"degree_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":23,"label":"Unknown"}],"label":"Degree"},{"name":"discipline_sim","items":[],"label":"Discipline"},{"name":"degree_granting_institution_sim","items":[{"value":"Columbia Theological Seminary","hits":23,"label":"Columbia Theological Seminary"}],"label":"Degree Granting Institution"},{"name":"department_sim","items":[],"label":"Department"},{"name":"funder_name_sim","items":[],"label":"Funder Name"},{"name":"event_title_sim","items":[],"label":"Event Title"},{"name":"event_date_sim","items":[],"label":"Event Date"},{"name":"institution_sim","items":[{"value":"Atla RIM","hits":23,"label":"Atla RIM"}],"label":"Host Institution"}],"pages":{"current_page":1,"next_page":2,"prev_page":null,"total_pages":3,"limit_value":10,"offset_value":0,"total_count":23,"first_page?":true,"last_page?":false}}}
