It examines the work of more than a dozen authors to understand their ideas of what missional is and holds those ideas up to the witness of Scripture. Next, this study explores what missional activity looks like in five mainline congregations through twenty-seven interviews with lay people and their pastors. This project traces the history of American mainline Protestantism, especially the Presbyterian Church (USA), and identifies the most important causes and consequences of disestablishment. The project isolates theological themes and establishes future trajectories to move mainline churches into the comingmillennium. Drawing on the insights of Icenogle and Osiek \u0026 Balch, this project focuses on helping one such congregation, Boone Memorial Presbyterian Church in Caldwell, Idaho, develop an articulated strategy of building intentional community through the medium of home-based small groups.
