Consequently many women experience long periods of spiritual darkness.  Through individual entrance and exit interviews of seven women from Highland Park Presbyterian Church, small group interaction with them around creative rearticulation of women's stories from scripture and individual Ignatian style meditation exercises, research discloses that all the women experienced sexual abuse, forced isolation and economic dependence.  Most had also experienced physical and verbal abuse. The formation of the person's understanding of self is discussed using Jessica Benjamin's Bonds of Love.  The connection between the prevailing theological anthropology and its interpretation in the church's history which has maintained suppression and domination of women is traced. A new theological paradigm is presented using Alistair McFadyen's The Call to Personhood, James N Poling's The Abuse of Power, and Elizabeth A Johnson in She Who Is. The thesis is that sexual abuse negatively affects a little girl's imagery of God and her self-esteem, but ultimately is not the final determiner of how she relates to God or how she views herself.
