As the traditional family structure continues to change and the secular world becomes more sophisticated in its appeal, the church faces the danger of becoming irrelevant to today's young person. In this project the biblical and psychological basis of youth ministry is examined. A youth ministry model entertaining young people is contrasted with a model that seeks to involve the teenagers themselves in ministry. A small group of senior high students on the south side of Atlanta are questioned concerning their level of spiritual commitment before and after a six-week ministry project involving them in an evangelistic outreach to other teens. Adult evaluators give their opinion of the effectiveness of the ministry project and an outside youth ministry expert reviews the basis of the ministry model used. This model could be used by any church to effectively involve their young people in ministry projects and thus maintain a high interest level among those teens."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["b5eba5c2-141b-4673-9689-2f9720736859"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791129476622450688,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:16:19.213Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T02:39:57Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:20:13Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"ec90eb0e-2b4b-418a-b874-fe40c13d8ddd","accessControl_ssim":["9a565b6f-b1cf-408c-8d5c-b2f32f7a207c"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Faith seeking disciples: a study towards reforming evangelism"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T02:39:56Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:53:31Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["ce954807-1f53-4488-8514-a618aa602095"],"hasLease_ssim":["2807556c-dfd2-473a-8f97-e99617e8f5b9"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Shirley C Guthrie","Ben C Johnson"],"year_tesim":["1993"],"location_tesim":["United States"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["James C Horn"],"keyword_tesim":["Theology, Reformed"],"publisher_tesim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Reformed Church","Evangelistic work"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This apologetic reclaims evangelism's rightful place within the Reformed tradition. Historical perspectives of American Presbyterian evangelism show that unresolved tensions over the certainty of conversion, sudden or nurtured, were absorbed by compromise. Theological and biblical inquiries searched the salient underpinnings for Reformed evangelism. Are new models possible today? The study investigated works of Calvin, Barth, Moltmann and others, with new contributions made. Conclusions present evangelism in the context of Christian vocation, discernment of being chosen by Christ for the Lord's purposes as proof of discipleship. This study focuses upon the elders' 'personal faith, knowledge of the doctrine, government, and discipline contained in the Constitution of the Church; and the duties of the office' (G-14.0205). Presbyterians hold the office of elder on an equal basis with the office of minister of Word and Sacrament. Based upon this equality, this training course reflects the concept of 'team ministry.' An underlying premise for the course is that a church can only be strong as its leadership. An examination is conducted of the biblical principles of leadership in both the Old and New Testaments. An exploration is undertaken of the ways in which the Presbyterian system of government embodies the principles of team ministry. Studies of the ways in which adults mature in faith are presented and analyzed. The result of the research is a five-week training course for newly elected elders. As agents of change they focus on developing others as leaders through recruitment, flexible training models and spiritual nurture."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["b5eba5c2-141b-4673-9689-2f9720736859"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791127544314986496,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T06:45:36.421Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T02:38:06Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:07:37Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"9f3c5c5b-12b7-44b0-a294-1e4e7a771e58","accessControl_ssim":["b0db857d-589f-4321-b8a4-d3a316525321"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Insights into caring: a biblical review"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T02:38:05Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T02:47:08Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["bab68a20-8740-4c6f-8199-684498411e50"],"hasLease_ssim":["fd940434-0fe1-44d0-9909-2028aad420d2"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Douglas W Hix"],"year_tesim":["1993"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Harold B Brown"],"publisher_tesim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Compassion"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["Why do people care in the Christian sense? Radical evangelism is an attempt to recapture a biblical approach to Christian outreach. It is 'radical' in the sense of 'basic.' Part 1 examines three representative biblical passages to provide an exegetical basis for the concept. Part 2 describes the relationship between evangelism and the three biblical forms of 'family.' The conclusion is that to produce the environment in which evangelism may take place the church must recognize and work within these three forms of the family.
