The gospel of Luke records that first century hearers of the gospel altered their relationship with possessions by either abandoning or sharing them with others in need.  When Jesus instructed his disciples to take nothing for their missionary journey he expected that their radical dependence on God for necessities would speak as loudly as their words.  Twenty-five participants were asked to study Luke/Acts on this subject and a paper on simplicity as a practical application of Jesus' teaching to the 1990s.  After a two-month period written reports from each participant were summarized in the conclusion of the dissertation. It makes a shift from factors that lead the church to be pastor-centered and also lead pastors into the hierarchical form of leadership ministry.  The initial chapter examines the foundational notions of Christian spirituality, of leadership, and of the laity.  The second chapter reviews the biblical definition and models of the church as the community of faith.  The third chapter explores the mission as evangelism, Missio Dei, liberation and inculturation, and reflects the ministry of all Christians. This was secondary, however, to the primary objective of learning inductively how to better understand, appreciate, and assimilate God's gracious gift of 'living forgiven.' Through a process of biblical education and forging an interpersonal trust relationship with the unchurched Hispanic, the pastor would have an opportunity to overcome some of the barriers of prejudice and misinformation which often prevent an Hispanic outsider from accepting an invitation to attend a Protestant church. Over the three-month test period, 47 adults participated in the home Bible study program.  Sixteen of the participants had never visited El Redentor Spanish Lutheran Church.  Of these, eleven persons subsequently attended a church worship service and five sought formal membership within four months. It proposes that students use peer mediation in a Scriptural based program.  The project uses previous evaluations of peer mediation programs and results of a questionnaire sent to all Lutheran High Schools in the United States.  The research shows a need for scriptural based peer mediation.  This includes a peer mediation workbook with sample forms and letters.  In response the paper espouses ways to implement a successful peer mediation program. A survey found that gender role differentiation was also an issue. Through a special emphasis, 'Male and female he created them: what does this mean?' the author utilized a sermon series, special Bible studies, skits/dramas, etc., to broach the topic over a ten-week period. Issues such as headship/submission in marriage and the ordination of women were not sidestepped. God's wisdom on the matter was presented, affirming His purpose for headship/submission, as well as limiting the pastoral office to qualified males. A youth-oriented culture views the growing, aging population as a burden not a blessing; that as the number of older adults grows, so will the problems associated with aging (chapter 1). In the context of the church community, the younger adults viewed an aging church population as the decline of a source of gifts and abilities, and a drain upon church resources as older adults' need for ministry increases. The specific Scripture for the basis and focus of this project is Psalm 92, vs 12-14. This Scripture text suggests that older adults, 'planted in the house of the Lord,' in the church, still can bear fruit in old age and have much to offer in the way of resources for the life and mission of the church. This project sought to challenge the myths and misconceptions that suggest older adults are a burden and present a barrier to church renewal (chapter 3). A preliminary questionnaire revealed that those most active in the church and generous with their temporal and spiritual gifts are the older adults. The Scriptures reveal that God does not discriminate on the basis of age when persons are called to use their gifts for the building up and renewal of the faith community (chapter 4), nor does one retire from their Christian vocation until they are called to God's eternal home. Thirty-seven mainline Christians, from various denominations, participated in this project. The Mission Society informs the congregation of mission work and mission opportunities in the United States and abroad. The task of the Mission Society is to educate and challenge individuals to serve in missions wherever possible. A brief study of the congregation's constitution indicates that missions must be clearly defined as the prime purpose for the congregation's being. Further information reveals a variety of Mission Societies to accomplish that purpose. Many serve missions in concert with the Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod, others serve agencies apart from Synodical structure. The theological study of 'God's mission' contributes to the scriptural knowledge of the student. Students discover God's worldview and His cross-cultural churches of the first century. The project provides assistance to the pastor in carrying out his ministerial task of Word and Sacrament. It increases awareness of mission challenges within the community, the Circuit, the District and the Synod. Foreign and local missions receive the benefit of the congregation's total participation in the undertaking.
