Systems theory provides the necessary tools to navigate the anxious swells of the ministry environment. A well self-defined person has clear goals, boundaries, and values. Low levels of self-differentiation negatively impact pastors ability to deal with manipulation, the herd-mentality, and relational conflict. Before and after a twelve week training course pastors were tested using three categories of Human Synergistic's Life Styles Inventory. A sample of 17 couples attended four workshops over five weeks. Training in family of origin issues, the nuclear family emotional system, triangulation, and differentiation of self was combined with teaching on a biblical theology of marriage and exposure to Abraham's genogram. The PAIR (Personal Assessment of Intimacy in Relationships) Inventory and a questionnaire were administered.
