She reviews historical and contemporary meanings and models of stewardship, emphasizing the contextual and adaptive nature of annual giving campaigns in churches. Her research explores her own experience and the experience of five early adopter congregations with the model. Her findings affirm the liturgical, Christological resonance of the model and its faithfulness and effectiveness. Basing the study on a biblically based Lutheran theology of baptism, congregational redevelopment theory, and the educational theories of Sara Little, the project generates enthusiasm among course participants, but evaluation shows no statistically significant changes in their attitudes compared to a control group. This project sought present attitudes on this problem through 213 pastor and 313 layperson questionnaires sent to churches within the Cape Cod Council, and random samples of the Massachusetts Conference of the United Church of Christ and Hyannis Federated Church.  Seminars were held for the respondents. Christians are called to a creative and caring partnership with God.  The aim of the study was to indicate that the concept of sabbath helps connect persons to God's purposes for creation. Responses came from 181 pastoral graduates of the two seminaries. The committee was exposed to the Hebrew Scriptures' understanding of the steward as the responsible householder of all creation and the Christian Scriptures' emphasis on Jesus Christ as God's chief steward.  After studying the nature of human identity and transformation, the committee then helped plan a sermon series on stewardship, recruited and conducted a sermon response group, and formulated a fall financial campaign. These were based on the biblical concept of the tithe, the stewardship teachings of Jesus and Paul, a theology of money, and various psychological motivations. The process included outside consultation, a four-session study course and five sermons on stewardship.  The pre- and post-course evaluation demonstrated that the study course significantly changed beliefs about stewardship and tithing, and promoted participation in the endowment fund. It is commonly viewed as a necessary evil for the survival of the church.  This project explores the role of the sermon in developing healthy stewardship awareness and practice by following the homiletical preparation of five pastors during the traditional fall stewardship campaign.  Reactions of the congregations are recorded through case studies which come from a small sharing group within each church.
