The project uses semi-structured interviews, questionnaires, and participatory group observation to collect data on change in clergy participants' leadership of missional growth before and after implementation of skills derived from the practice of midwifery.  The data collected measures change in discernment ability and effectiveness in advancing mission. In this project, the author proposes that reimagining call and response in preaching as an ongoing sermon conversation advances discipleship in the congregation. The congregation begins the dialogue with the preacher prior to the development of the sermon; participates in traditional call and response during the sermon, and continues the conversation after the sermon is preached. Conflict is conceptualized as a process moving toward actualization of social entities when the conflict is properly managed and toward disintegration when the conflict is poorly managed or unmanaged.  This conceptualization is developed theologically, biblically, historically, and sociologically. It was based on the theological affirmations that true preaching extends the work of the Incarnation; that worship provides experiences including: providence, faith, grace, repentance, communion, vocation, and an awareness of the holy; and that the thrust of all pastoral work, including preaching, is the communication of the love and acceptance of God.  Ten people met for an hour each Sunday, discussed the sermon and reviewed the Scripture for the next week.  A feedback form was given to the congregation each week.  The results were more effective communication, better constructed sermons, and more effective integration of preaching and pastoral care.
