The goal of this thesis project has been to implement a model of discipleship, based upon the book of Titus, among sixty one church leaders from various denominational and tribal backgrounds in southern Tanzania to determine if these misconceptions about God and lifestyle practices could change. This is attested to by two surveys conducted among alumni pastors and students of Singapore Bible College. To address this challenge, a homiletics curriculum on expository preaching is developed to equip students at Singapore Bible College. An effective expository sermon displays four characteristics: (1) true to Authorial intent, (2) clear, (3) relevant, and (4) interesting. In formulating the curriculum, the thesis takes into account the philosophy of expositoty preaching, as well as the broader subjects on the teaching of homiletics and the challenges that confront the teacher in Asia. The thesis proposes contextualized education and methodologies that take into account the cultural characteristics and cognitive learning processes of the Asian student. It looks at the prevailing struggles of integrating academics and ministry within a seminary setting, and offers suggestions for the teaching of homiletics as an integral part of theological education. Six qualities of an excellent teacher of homiletics are discussed - godly character, biblical conviction, pastoral credibility, learner-centered competence, academic credentials, and interdisciplinary collegiality."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791132080660283392,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:57:42.617Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T08:57:36Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:23:44Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"11f9db01-3ae5-4f52-a3d8-caf8c98c129f","accessControl_ssim":["69a49834-d5bf-4c0c-b45e-67f21006a090"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Leadership and culture: pastoral leadership in the development of church governance in new Evangelical Covenant churches"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T08:57:35Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T22:38:53Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["77708ae4-dcac-43f6-9c89-4182aaafb9b4"],"hasLease_ssim":["eff3dd87-e963-4849-8f92-d09513251ace"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Steven W Klipowicz"],"year_tesim":["2002"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Eric P Sparrman"],"publisher_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Leadership--Religious aspects--Christianity","Church polity","Evangelical Covenant Church"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This project explores the leadership role of pastors in the development of governance in new Evangelical Covenant churches. This project is written out of the conviction that preaching has fallen on difficult times in this society. Nevertheless, the preaching task remains the primary means of proclaiming God's message to the world. The church must do a better job of utilizing lay people in the task of proclamation and train them to preach the Word in a relevant and interesting way. This project provides a tested ten session curriculum design for instructors desiring to help their lay students preach expositorily. The ten sessions of ninety minutes each deal with essential areas of message preparation. Also included in this project are the theological reflections related to a course for lay preachers and a review of the relevant literature. The material was specifically designed to train lay people at Elisha Preaching Institute, held in Fountain of Joy Prayer Church in Sunnyvale, California, where the writer is pastor. However, it could prove beneficial to all who wish to provide an introductory training program for lay people in the preparation of biblical messages. The fact that non-professionals would be using these materials was given full consideration in the development of the curriculum."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791131007747883008,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:40:39.408Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T08:56:39Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:34:38Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"43473b12-471e-4b28-8137-8a11050c4a2f","accessControl_ssim":["ff6f78b9-3d3e-4080-9c3c-1375606aaad0"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["From psalm to sermon: preaching the psalms in a genre-sensitive manner"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T08:56:38Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T00:05:05Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["35e081a7-71d7-4678-ae94-e6ed6973e48c"],"hasLease_ssim":["0a718d2e-9339-48a3-b639-f125692e860c"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Haddon W Robinson"],"year_tesim":["2002"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Kenneth William Smith"],"publisher_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Expository preaching","Bible. This project reflects on the nature of community and relationships shaped by the covenant of grace. A primary premise of the project is that much confusion exists today about the nature of relationships, stemming from a misunderstanding of our relationship with God. Confusing covenant and contract leads to much disintegration and breakdown in churches and families. Clarifying the nature of God's relationship with His people should shed light on ways to develop a true covenant community and inspire true covenant marriages. The thesis begins with a discussion of the nature of today's culture and an examination of the history of West End Presbyterian Church. A survey of Thomas F. Torrance's thinking on the nature of the covenant of grace follows. The next chapter is a discussion of the structure of the ministry of the church in light of the covenant and culture. Chapter four explains the appendices. Chapter five looks at the future of West End Presbyterian Church in light of the covenant. The intention is to demonstrate that the creation of true covenant community is possible even in today's culture."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130194654789632,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:27:43.982Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T08:55:39Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:29:03Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"2776b0ed-f846-4672-9cc9-7a76690fad53","accessControl_ssim":["f29a6f46-5d05-4f7b-acc4-22b3513efe4a"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["The Smoky Mountain Children's Home: a model for house parent accession, training and development"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T08:55:38Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T23:17:21Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["042c5b98-4d68-4a6d-bfd2-9f260b366c47"],"hasLease_ssim":["510c5450-fedf-465f-8721-56e36e619538"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Raymond F Pendleton"],"year_tesim":["2002"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Rafael J Quiles"],"publisher_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Children--Institutional care","Smoky Mountain Children's Home (Sevierville, Tenn)"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The Smoky Mountain Children's Home is located in Sevierville, Tennessee. The home is a Church of God Cleveland, Tennesee institution established around 1921, originally for the purpose of caring, training, and educating orphans to be Christians and sensible members of society. The program functioned from a Christian, parenting perspective; however, the Home operated with a staff of house parents who were loving but professionally untrained. The need to develop a professionally trained house parent staff was deduced from the challenges brought on by the increased problems presented by the late twentieth and early twenty-first century child, as well as from the lack of a coherent on-site training program. The strategic point of meeting the modern needs of the children is to improve parenting skills in house parents. This is a paradigm shift from the children to the house parents as they carry out the mission of the Home. The new program establishes two stages: 1. The hiring and training of new house parents; 2. The on-going training program with the core based on the Common Sense Parenting program from Boys Town. The new professional training program is in its third year. Generally, many house parents now think of themselves as professionals. There is an improvement in the children's behavior and some children see their house parent calmer as they confront a crisis."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130281225224192,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:29:06.542Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T08:55:09Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:44:18Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"6f8a66b2-305f-40c3-a4d9-925754fb3537","accessControl_ssim":["354a3bfd-6c4b-4936-99f8-d574e737f55b"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["A pietist model for the renewal of the church"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T08:55:06Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T01:23:58Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["cff67b60-5907-4bbe-82f4-2fb44c039a18"],"hasLease_ssim":["be789720-d594-4dd8-84e5-c02e61214b61"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Garth M Rosell"],"year_tesim":["2002"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Dale A Prouk"],"publisher_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Church renewal","Ashburnham Community Church (Asburnham, Mass)"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This project examines the need for spiritual and numeric renewal within the mainline Protestant church.
