This thesis-project shows how changes were made to the session of a PC(USA) congregation to attempt to improve effectiveness, and a policy manual growing from that experience was disseminated to other church leaders for their opinions. The researcher presents a theological motivation for churches to pursue changes in the leadership structure of the session. After examining modern and postmodern paradigms, the writer asserts that accommodations to the modern paradigm do not meet the demands and expectations of ministry in a postmodern context. The writer then proposes missional values and structures to enhance the effectiveness of the local church in the postmodern context. A detailed case study shows that these structural changes increased the effectiveness of a local church's ministry, increased the satisfaction of its leaders, fit PC(USA) polity, and could be applied with profit in other church situations."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791131917135904768,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:55:06.668Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T14:57:55Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:30:41Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"2de7de5b-d694-4c59-a9e4-3ecec241cabe","accessControl_ssim":["def5cbc6-4887-4054-bda9-acde213151c9"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["A manual to help house church leaders in China understand and teach the biblical doctrine"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T14:57:54Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T23:28:25Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["4ebfea2a-70c3-4f20-ab23-1df168d3a796"],"hasLease_ssim":["317256b4-75fb-433f-84c9-217d01e41466"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["David A Currie"],"year_tesim":["2009"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Yan Xiong"],"publisher_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Leadership--Religious aspects--Christianity","Christians","Christian education of adults","Bible","Handbooks and manuals","House churches","Bible--Study--Methodology"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This thesis presents a rationale for training Chinese house church leaders. A literature review and survey revealed two primary philosophies coaches have employed: principle- and performance-based. The researcher investigated the principle-based approach, primarily because of the values these coaches shared. The principle-oriented group contained a subset that articulated a biblical focus. A series of interviews was conducted to discover what connection biblically-based coaches might have with the leadership of Christ. The results suggested that coaching could function as a form of discipleship. This led to an exegetical investigation of the Gospel of Matthew. The result was the identification of a set of values and practices that helped Christian coaches better connect their faith with their profession. This project studies the factors involved in the healing process of victims of spiritual abuse as well as ideas from systems theory as to what factors contribute to an abusive, toxic church. The author uses a qualitative research approach and utilizes the tools of a questionnaire and interviews with nine victims of spiritual abuse in Southern Baptist churches. The book of consolation in Isaiah is used as a biblical base for understanding a theology of hope and healing from oppressive circumstances. One outcome of this study is a change model entitled 'The process of healing from spiritual abuse' which involves the phases of oppression, transition, and restoration. The study concludes that resiliency is the outcome of healing. After interviewing ten Asian American churches in the northeastern United States in regards to their discipleship processes, and reviewing selected literature on discipleship, a process was developed. Churches in the United States often struggle to effectively equip believers with a strong foundation in the Word of God and to multiply by making disciples. The lack of relationships within the church body that encourage and guide spiritual formation, and discipleship that does not integrate transparent relationships, mutual accountability, and biblical truth, are part of the cause. The discipleship process that is presented within addresses these issues."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791129920344162304,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:23:22.378Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T14:57:17Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:38:22Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"5219798a-8107-433e-a9ac-39b1a7535992","accessControl_ssim":["a2a7f7a3-3432-4e99-add1-2fb3a2cc6108"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["The denominational executive and congregational conflict in Mennonite Brethren churches"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T14:57:17Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T00:32:13Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["c4298db4-907b-4f10-a046-7ee28b52cab8"],"hasLease_ssim":["44848001-41a8-49fd-bbaf-1373e4d4a536"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Rodney Cooper"],"year_tesim":["2009"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Gary M Wall"],"keyword_tesim":["Congregations--Internal conflict"],"publisher_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Religions","Congregations","Mennonites--Discipline","Church controversies--Mennonites","United States Conference of Mennonite Brethren Churches","Theology","Church discipline--Biblical teaching","Bible. This thesis project is designed and organized around bibliographic research, historical analysis, and descriptive research. A biblical foundation is laid, with particular attention given to an exposition of Matthew 18. An overview of church conflict is presented with a focus on an Anabaptist theological perspective. A brief historical analysis of the Mennonite Brethren movement provides the denominational context. The relevant conflict resolution literature is surveyed and a case study using retrospective methodology is provided as descriptive research."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130867049955328,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:38:25.228Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T14:56:55Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:31:31Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"33da02e4-8c5b-4b93-b19f-e3f1a0f32ef1","accessControl_ssim":["d1dfe61e-a083-480e-a904-4fc5bb5d062a"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["The spirit of reform: St. Augustine and Jonathan Edwards on the glory of God"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T14:56:55Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T23:38:03Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["8acd5f9d-e798-4463-ac15-0bf629cbca09"],"hasLease_ssim":["18347c1e-8934-42a2-b825-db5d39c36c62"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Garth M Rosell"],"year_tesim":["2009"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Alison K Littauer"],"publisher_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Theological anthropology--Christianity--History of doctrines","Augustine, of Hippo, Saint, 354-430","Edwards, Jonathan, 1703-1758","God","God--History of doctrines","Theology"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["Augustine and Jonathan Edwards shared a focus on the depravity of man which caused them to look to the sovereign grace of an intervening God. The conbination of a low view of man and a high view of God was critical in both the establishment of the early church under Augustine and the the later renewal of American Puritan culture under Edwards. The high view of God is seen in the writings of both scholars, and implications of this theme are seen in Puritan culture and the writings of Jonathan Edwards. The implications of this lost high view of God are examined, as it relates to the modern church's more anthrocentric focus, across most denominational lines, and practical application for church renewal is suggested."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130436540301313,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:31:34.662Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T14:56:47Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:43:06Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"6b35c88e-ff09-41d8-84c2-41552c20d16a","accessControl_ssim":["aa499ceb-aead-4e25-9733-d03b8f16367d"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["What is the function of unction?
