The thesis is that Christian faith can undermine the power of hopelessness, even in the face of devastating circumstances. The project includes a theology of hope and contrasts the characteristics of hope with those of individualism in contemporary American society.  The theology is actively applied in a series of six hour-and-a-half sessions with senior high youth. The project, working with a confirmation class, tried to provide a youth ministry program that enabled these young people to become active in the church and to grow spiritually.  Chapter one tells how the project began and describes the development of the youth ministry program (First Congregational Church, Greenfield, Mass).  Chapter two looks at the biblical, theological, and theoretical bases of youth ministry. Faith development and biblical themes are examined and definitions of spirituality are explored.  Chapter three evaluates the project and describes the enthusiasm of the congregation for an on-going ministry with youth. The intentional process included an invitation to and a decision to participate, workshops in skills, mentoring, and evaluation.  Skills, taught in 'Growth Sessions', gave practice through group and individual processes.  Support through mentoring and evaluation was very important in encouraging persons in their growth. In 1986 the school needed to be reorganized because it lacked clear goals and a well-defined action plan for accomplishing those goals.  Also, materials used were insufficient for training members.  The implementation of this project demands a sound theological foundation which included an adequate view of scripture, ministry, and the role of the local church as seen in the Assemblies of God.  The biblical and historical role of the laity is discussed in order to provide an adequate basis for implementing a school of lay ministry. The Christian church and Alcoholics Anonymous are parallel rehabilitative  and regenerative agencies for helping hurting people.  They each can become more effective through building bridges which combine their spiritual resources in a local congregational setting. This is done by the establishment of a soup kitchen and a 100 bed emergency shelter for the homeless.  The human services are set up in such a way as to follow a theory of evangelization that will enable them to be repeated in other communities, and allow the poor and the larger community an opportunity to live the Gospel message in such a way that both become part of the problem and solution.  The church is seen as the instrument of the Spirit enabling communities to realize its calling to truly live the faith we all proclaim by hearing the cry of the
