The extended essay compares the decline of the American church to the five stages of death described by Kübler-Ross. Recognizing the importance of the scriptures in shaping the community of faith, questions are raised around issues of selection, arrangement, parameters of lections and the relationship between lections. In addition, the issue of what biblical material is not included in the lectionary becomes important. The content of the non-lectionary biblical material is identified and summarized chapter by chapter. Thematic and hermeneutic issues are examined.
