The purpose was to identify the ways worship contributes to an awareness of God's presence in all places, and to the understanding of the church as family. The prominent research method employed was the pro-active research method wherein the researcher and participants were actively engaged with one another in a transformative process. With the community seated around the table in a Presbyterian (USA) church, the congregation was studied for six-months using linked quantitative and qualitative methods of data collection. Architectural, historical and theological sources from the Reformed tradition inform the study. For the most part, the church has ignored this major life-cycle event, but the author seeks to rectify this neglect.  He draws on liturgical history and developmental psychology to argue that Confirmation cannot fill this gap. Leaving home is an initiation into the culture, not into the church. Christian worship is the setting for retelling those stories, and within worship the arts add a new dimension which bring the stories to life for the worshippers.  The project is a practical and theological exploration of the use of mime as an art form used in worship.  A mime worship service was developed for a local congregation and a synod meeting to consider the thesis. The arts touch people on a different level than the preached word.  This added dimension allows people to participate in the stories.
