By conducting in-depth interviews with 26 octogenarians, this project finds evidence to suggest positive changes on the dimensions of awareness, acceptance and autonomy during four decade-periods: the functional fifties, the family-focused sixties, the transitional seventies and the transcendent eighties. It includes a brief historical overview of those with a mental handicap and examines Christian anthropology, ecclesiology, and the healing miracles of Jesus and their implications for those with a mental handicap.  The focus is an orientation for volunteers and a Bible camp program field tested over a 10-year period.
