Five themes emerge: consistent presence of conflict, perceived lack of spiritual and personal care, absence of relationship building, high levels of family stress, and continuing personal faith. One of the better opportunities for achieving spiritual growth is participation is the Cursillo (Via de Cristo) movement. The method of study included reading and analysis of congregational statistical data, personal interviews with Cursillo participants from the congregation both before and after attending a retreat, surveys of Cursillo participants and comparisons with similar congregations.  Results of the study indicated that those who attend Cursillo (or similar programs) are uplifted and renewed and are better able to avoid burnout in the congregation. The basic approach was inductive.  The method of studying men was through personal narrative, story and observation.  The family, the culture and the church affect the way men perceive themselves as males.  The most important influence are other men, especially fathers.  When these relationships are perceived as negative, men experience personal, sexual and spiritual fragmentation. This thesis was explored using two methods of data collection: a series of case consultation meetings involving two separate clergy groups; and a survey of 228 Michigan clergy. The author gathered information from four sources: the permanent deacons of this archdiocese; the priests with whom they minister; the local formation program; and the national office for the permanent diaconate in Washington, DC. The program was sponsored by the Northern Wisconsin District of the former American Lutheran Church.  The thesis was a response to two questions: who ministers to our clergy? where does the caregiver go to receive care?  The Mentor Project had four design facets: a mentor who was available to clergy; spiritual retreats; colleague groups; and fellowship groups.  The key to this project was the provision of mentors.  The pilot Mentor Project was a proven program which met the self-care needs of clergy participants. This project tests a model for evangelism which emphasizes invitation, encounter with Christ, and involvement in the life and mission of the church.  Tested in a congregation for several years, the model proves a valuable tool for envisioning the task and for evaluating congregational effectiveness.  Evangelism is found to be a difficult task involving every aspect of congregational ministry.  Such an evaluation, and changes it may call for, may be threatening and involve taking risks.
