The thesis summarizes work done in foundations of gestalt therapy, a pastoral care model presented by Clebsch and Jaekle (healing, sustaining, guiding, reconciling), and primary chemical dependency treatment (utilizing the Minnesota Model).  The author then presents case illustrations dealing with an individual stuck in past history, a  family with communication difficulties, a couple trapped by the past, a grief experience, and an individual seeking a sense of safety. Included are my own personal experiences in the parish ministry dealing with inactivity within the congregation. The pastoral task presented in this project is to guide individuals through a lifetime of experience through liturgy, teaching and preaching in which they face the reality of death in nonthreatening ways.  This process frees parishioners to live apart from the fear of death. Examples of spiritual guides who have achieved that freedom are St Monica, St Bernard of Clairvaux, Martin Luther, John Arndt, Paul Gerhardt, J S Bach, and Dietrich Bonhoeffer.
