This paper records what happened when the author added extra music, stories and objects one at a time to the sermon delivery.  One week later listeners filled out questionnaires. The responses to sermons delivered without the extra element were compared to the responses of sermons delivered without the extra element. The author discusses how this spirit leads the preacher to open up her or his private world to the stranger.  Sermon discussion groups, interviews, and journal writing were used to uncover what is helpful and what is not helpful when preaching among people who are not connected by common history or tradition, nor by ties of friendship of family. Commonly, preachers are taught to preach, but seldom are hearers equipped for their role.  Employing the language of personality and temperament types as a vehicle for discussion, a strategy is suggested which brings preacher and hearers together in a small group format, enabling each to enhance their skills in hearing the Word of God by listening to one another. Active members delivered sermon tapes to less-than-active and interested non-churched neighbors.
