Critics fear that contemporary worship creates religious consumers, not authentic disciples.  This thesis, however, maintains that deeply-rooted generational patterns, the impact of media, and the tensions between order and ardor, identity and relevance, and congregational culture and mission, have spurred a hunger for contemporary culture. The study examines John Knox Presbytery (a presbytery of 64 churches and 105 resident ministers located in the upper Midwest region along a stretch of the Mississippi River involving portions of Minnesota, Wisconsin and Iowa), in which attempts are being made to develop a community of clergy through gatherings of clergy for worship, education, development and support. Many congregations have anchored their life in their buildings rather than in their Lord.  This project examines the relationship of buildings to mission, looking for a way to balance buildings with vision and ministry.  The study shows that congregations have struggled with this issue for generations.  Two separate congregations began a process of building assessment.  Their different motivations for participation affected their results. The principle that generational cohorts have a personality is the foundation for differentiating between generations and identifying a preaching style for each generation.  The thesis project shows that the generational model can be used to form sermons that address particular generations as well as build understanding between the generations. Using the metaphor of a bridge to symbolize the flow of ideas from the culture into the church, the research reveals the influence of depth psychology on the development of the specialized ministry of pastoral counseling.  Two case studies compare the ministry of a pastoral counselor in a private practice of psychotherapy and with a congregation. This paper includes an examination of historical and contemporary attitudes toward integration.  The model for leader development assures leadership diversity and access to power by newer members. Shame can be unhealthy when it takes the form of abusive 'shaming' behavior.  This thesis examines honor/shame from theological, biblical, socio-anthropological, and family systems perspectives.  Interventions include Bible study, worship, a task force to study the history and mission of the church, group norms for church officers, and a book review/discussion group.  These interventions or similar ones tailor-made for a particular congregation can be applied effectively in other locations. The challenge facing the church is that spiritual formation and direction by both laity and clergy seem to have been lost or forgotten in most parishes.  This project researches spirituality from a biblical and theological point of view, noting various passages and writings that underscore humanity's restless search for meaning in life.
