The author proposes a four sermon 'process' approach, and identifies four characteristics of effective goodbye preaching.  Sermons and feedback from a parish project group are included in the supporting material.  A theology of leave-taking to undergird the process is also offered. Youth feel left out of the preaching moment.  Youth will respond to preaching that tries to meet them at their level, lifts up their experience as ways a community experiences the divine, and fosters a sense of companionship on the journey of faith that all disciples make.  To date there has been little written in the field of homiletics about the youth and preaching. The metaphor of preacher as companion incorporates inviting youth to reflect on their own identities, nurturing the youth, and lifting up their experiences as ways to encounter the divine.  The methods used to engage youth in preaching were using language that youth can understand, employing story and narrative, and occasionally moving out of the pulpit. The hermeneutical and homiletical tools gave the voice and vision for understanding both the biblical and life text as interdependent allies. This model has survived in the church long after its demise in western culture. A new model, 'servant leadership,' is more appropriate in the church at the turn of the twenty-first century.  From servant leadership a model of servant preaching can be developed.  Servant preaching reflects a contemporary homiletic that emphasizes partnership between preacher and congregation, and fosters a relationship of trust in which a preacher's leadership is established. Incorporating newcomers into the church is the primary ministry challenge.  The major theological principle involved is Christian hospitality.  Christian hospitality is defined as attitude and practice of providing the atmosphere and opportunities in which strangers are free to become friends, thus feeling accepted, included, and loved. This requires the church to develop a selfless, welcoming spirit. The change theory of adaptive leadership is focused on the transformation of Bethany Church as we seek to invite strangers into our lives and into the faith community.  Adaptive work requires a leader to lead by facing painful circumstances and developing new attitudes and behaviors. The research discloses that when the salient characteristic of a congregation is ambiguity, a focus on identity and vision has the potential to increase energy for mission in the congregation more than an emphasis on programs or congregational health. If the laity is engaged in intentional study of the scripture text prior to hearing it read and preached in worship, they are more likely to remember the text and sermon and to apply both to their daily lives.  This thesis provides a practical method for the consistent study of the scripture text used in worship. By utilizing the Scripture Journals which are the foundation of this project, individuals and groups are given a viable opportunity to be involved in the both the study and practical application of the scripture text.
