A series of sermons and sermon interactions was utilized to increase the congregation's awareness of the need for training new adult members in discipleship.  A curriculum was designed that consisted of ten discipleship training sessions.  To determine the effectiveness of the program, the experimental research method was used. Positive attitudinal changes were affected in deacons and church members toward supportive counseling. He made research notations and collated the material for use in the model project.  A discipler workshop and a twelve-week training program was implemented among the project participants. A volunteer group of Black males who had overcome their alienation was used to help members of the target group to do the same. Thirteen church members participated in a program of study and planning.  The study involved five sermons, ten classes, and four planning sessions.  The study group developed and the church approved a statement of church purpose with goals and objectives for 1990. Teaching methods included patient visitation, group supervision, didactic seminars, and ministry reporting. Experimental and descriptive research methodologies were used with a control and an experimental group.  Student growth was evaluated in four areas.  Statistically significant growth (p= .o5) was measured in the area of self-concept.  No statistically significant change was demonstrated in the students' attitude toward hospital ministry.  Growth was observed in pastoral identity and pastoral
