It was based on pastoral visits with five families of the chronically ill and the illness of the author's husband. The hypothesis was that the chronically ill and their families face unique challenges and needs for pastoral care not observed in acute or terminal illness due to the 'ongoingness' of the chronic disease or injury. A Family Systems approach and theological reflection were used to analyze the experiences. The hypothesis was proven correct. The project sought through pastoral care, demonstrated in an intentional small group process, to promote theological reflection about meaningful living.  The desired effect was to know the fact of one's death to be an impetus for life. This report outlines theological and psychological bases for the concept of anticipatory grief.  Methodology entailed determination of issues the participants wanted addressed as well as delineation of the mechanics of the phenomenon of anticipatory grief.  The project showed a positive correlation between a constructive sense of anticipatory grief and a sense of meaning for life. The report outlines how the 'Myers-Briggs Personality Type Inventory' has been helpful in promoting understanding between couples and how this basic tool can be incorporated into the process of pre-marital counseling. The hermeneutic was pastoral and involved two foci: the theological-theoretical and the experiential-phenomenological. The former dealt with paul tillich's being and nonbeing as it relates to anxiety. This particular method of study focused on the nature of pastoral ministry via living human documents (persons).
