Research agencies such as the Search Institute have rated Lutherans lowest in the areas of faith maturity and growth in faith maturity among Protestant denominations.  Such studies indicate a lack of integration of faith understanding into holy living.  The author's thesis utilizes Martin Luther's formative approach to the catechism and Adrian van Kaam's formation science to facilitate the integration of belief and faith practice for Lutherans as well as other faith traditions.  The author has designed a six-week course to put this thesis into practice. The paper gives a rational for and describes the steps taken to develop five small groups in the congregation which are called missional covenant groups.  Covenant groups consist of approximately eight to ten people of various ages and life experiences from the community and the congregation.  Covenant groups seek to fulfill the church's mission of transforming people's lives through Jesus Christ. Research focused on male spirituality and small group dynamics.  Scriptures that emphasized spiritual relationships, spiritual growth, and spiritual commitment directed the group and helped strengthen relationships with God and each other.  Discussion questions and a closing exercise for each meeting are included in the paper.
