The author researched and recounts the Biblical and historical record of elder practice, including 19th and 20th century Session minutes, elder manuals, and historical records demonstrating this shift. Founded on Biblical texts and the theology of Schleiermacher, the project initiated and assessed an eight-week intentional learning community within Palisades Presbyterian Church of San Diego, California. Weekly community meetings involved study, prayer, discussion, and spiritual practices. This effort is framed by the Susquehanna Health Pastoral Care Department's transition from a center of clinical pastoral education to a hospital department comprised of professional chaplains ministering to the spiritual needs of patients, their families, and hospital staff. A combination of questionaires, research on theological significance of infant baptism, and a study workshop, followed up with an evaluation proved an adequate method to achieve this goal. The author introduced to the seminary curriculum a course presenting social ministry tools and practices.  This paper offers a working definition of 'social ministry,' a review of that construct in Scripture and Church history, and an assessment of the likelihood of students becoming social ministry practitioners. Spiritual tensions arise in personal and community contexts when faithful Christian stewardship is not practiced. This Doctor of Ministry Project researched the underlying biblical and historical sources of Orthodox offering practices.  Members of three Orthodox Christian mission parishes were engaged in a dialog, to probe existing beliefs and practices of financial offering and the explore the Orthodox vision of stewardship.
