The number and rate of resignations and a review of the literature provide context. Analysis of the interview data reveals consensus regarding the seminary's failure to encourage personal maturity, an overall positive experience of priesthood and problems with the institutional church in areas of authority and celibacy. The researcher speculates that the conflict between the respondents' idealized image of church and their lived experience weakened their commitment to a celibate priesthood. Inadequate knowledge of common staff dynamics, in which sex is but one factor, causes misunderstandings of their complexity. To enhance harmony and mutuality during candidacy and in staff relationships, a discussion-starter is provided. A theoretical model of staff relationships is developed.
