Members of the groups strove to assist each other in paying attention to God. Nine people were trained to be leaders of the groups. Five groups were formed incorporating twenty-seven participants. As part of the project, a spiritual discernment handbook was developed by the author. The focus is a phenomenological approach that takes seriously the theology of the different traditions from their own particular perspectives. Differences are discussed along with similarities. These two theories are built around presuppositions similar to a theological anthropology in which the Old Testament 'image of God' and the New Testament 'Body of Christ' are central. Those theories can enable the preacher to conduct a double hermeneutic. The interpretation of the biblical text and the use of behavioral science in the interpretation of the congregation can both assist the preacher preparing meaningful sermons.
