The situation of the diocese of Bismark is similar to most rural dioceses in the United States. Integrating gender studies, rural sociology, rural catechetical ministry and contemporary leadership theory, this thesis-project maintains that leadership development uniquely focused for women in rural catechetical ministry will increase their sense of self as leader and leadership practices. The study gives voice to rural women involved in catechetical ministry as they expressed themselves in various sessions. The author used three questionnaires to research the diocese of Sioux City presbyterate's spiritual and ministerial lives and to identify factors which contribute to priests' satisfaction. The responses of Jesus-Caritas priests, priests who belong to other support groups, and priests who belong to no support group were analyzed. This research was distributed to the presbyterate, and the author mentored a group of priests in the formation of a new Jesus-Caritas Priests' Fraternity. As a result of this research, a new six-week program of spiritual formation based on Jesus Christ as our spiritual pathway is now being regularly offered. Adults gather to reflect and share with one another spiritual topics affecting their lives. In the perspective of the American experience, the elements, benefits, and challenges of small faith groups are described. Research indicates that small faith groups have an impact on the faith life of adults. The spirituality in small faith groups is explored in connection with Franciscan values. Employing qualitative, descriptive, ethnographic research, the project interviews ill and injured persons in depth and develops a Coping Mechanism Assessment Tool (CMAT) to process the data from these interviews. Discovery of the paschal mystery within the life experience of 63 families and individual members of Saint John's Roman Catholic Church in Jordan, Minnesota, leads the author to suggest a theology of incarnation to support parish community, worship, service, and teaching.
