Using AA co-founder Bill Wilson as the paradigm, the author studied the phenomenon, termed 'metaconversion,' in twenty AA members, detailing characteristics occurring before and after the experience.  Biblical and historical personages were studied for evidences of the phenomenon.  An analysis is made of how the Twelve Steps of AA fosters metaconversion. There are three sections to the work: a comprehensive study of conversion from the biblical material through current history to the present; a consideration of the contextualization of the message of the good news within the Australian scene; and a field study questionnaire and in-depth interviews of the clergy within the diocese.  As a result of this study it was found that the ethos of the clergy is more diverse than at first thought and that a broader definition of conversion needed to be considered.
