Pastor-spiritual directors, elders, and scholars in spirituality were interviewed. The author explored his congregation's historical and sociological setting. His findings indicate a disconnection between reason and spirituality. Spiritual direction is emerging in a church crisis of spiritual decline. For historical perspective, he turned to John Calvin, Karl Rahner, and Howard Thurman. Additional insights came from biblical study, spiritual theologians, and contemporary church leaders. The thesis is that interim ministry can be carried out effectively using spiritual guidance, rather than management, as the central organizing principle.  Methodology is to survey relevant literature, describe the social framework, explore family systems concepts of homeostasis, differentiation, and emotional triangles, form spirituality groups to explore spiritual guidance, and formulate conclusions. Lay care-givers (elders and deacons) attended a two-day workshop in which they were presented with a brief history and explanation of pastoral care and spirituality, and introduced to the concept of 'spiritually centered pastoral care' or spiritual direction by lay care-givers. The study involves in-depth research into the approaches of the two major figures in the history of spiritual direction: Benedict and Ignatius Loyola, representing the ancient and classical eras of religious thought, respectively.  There follows a study of four modern women writers in the field of spiritual direction: Evelyn Underhill, Dorothee Soelle, Sandra Schneiders, and Carolyn Gratton.  The insights of all of these writers are evaluated, sifted and combined to form the basis of a workshop on spiritual direction presented twice to groups of apporximately 100 women from the denomination in a weekend retreat setting. A key feature of the Workbook is 'The Anchorhold Personality Temperament Indicator' which leads persons to learn meditation according to their personality temperament. Faith mentoring is understood as accompaniment that assists in vocational, relational and spiritual growth. Following Sandra Matthei's model for faith mentoring, three dimension of faith mentoring are discussed (incarnational, contextual, relational) and four roles explored (guide, guarantor, model, mediator).  The method of addressing each correspondent was informed by social analysis concerning Filipino cultural values and Charles Taylor's three stage metanoia model.
