Current discussions are based on resources from outside the denomination.  This dissertation provides an in-depth denominational study to stimulate further discussion and upon which to begin to build a biblical view of the role of women in the church. The research includes an overview of contemporary Christian feminism, an extensive history of Advent Christian women and their contributions to the denomination, an exegesis of selected Pauline passages concerning women in the church and the practical implications for Advent Christians today. Flory identified with great missionaries; her faith and intelligence, undergirded by enormous energy and drive, created so many ideas and involved so many people she was uncontainable. The thesis of this dissertation is that parishioners' image of the ideal is a major factor.  Adams probes the cognitive, affective and behavioral components of church decision making by examining the biblical and doctrinal approach of the UPC, interviewing pastor nominating committees which selected ministers during the period, and questioning all the heads of staff themselves to compile a profile of the persons who were chosen.
