The remarkable analogy between the author's experiences of patriarchy in Japan and those of first-century Palestinian women is a major tool in reconstructing how the women in Mark became empowered and activated as full disciples. Current discussions are based on resources from outside the denomination.  This dissertation provides an in-depth denominational study to stimulate further discussion and upon which to begin to build a biblical view of the role of women in the church. The research includes an overview of contemporary Christian feminism, an extensive history of Advent Christian women and their contributions to the denomination, an exegesis of selected Pauline passages concerning women in the church and the practical implications for Advent Christians today.
