More and more individuals are giving importance to their personal spiritual experience. Simultaneously, such people are recognizing the value of usable patterns of spiritual formation from the history of Christian spirituality. These time-tested models are providing help in discovering the divine presence and identifying the quiet whispers of God in one's personal life as well as within the communities to which one belongs. Accepting a renewed quest of spirituality as part of our contemporary American society, this dissertation/project attempted to assist six men, from three distinct generations, in their everyday awareness of God. The pattern from the history of Christian spiritual formation under scrutiny was the 'Spiritual Exercises' written in the 16th century by Ignatius Loyola. From for 12 weeks, September 1 through November 30, six Presbyterian men from the same parish entered into the Exercises. The primary resource was 'Choosing Christ in the World: Directing the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius Loyola According to Annotation Eighteen and Nineteen' by Joseph Tetlow, S.J. During the 90 days each participant followed a daily sequence of prayer and reflection adapted from the Spiritual Exercises. Individually, the retreatants met twice a month with the retreat director/dissertation author and once a month gathered together as a group. Written journal entries composed during the experience, one-on-one meetings with the retreat director/author and self-evaluations completed by the participants at the beginning and conclusion of the project provide the basis to identify affect (emotions) and effect (behaviors) influenced by the experience with the Exercises. The author also utilized the work of William Straus and Neil Howe, 'Generations: The History of America's Future, 1584 to 2069' to provide generational context and identify influences."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["San Francisco Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["38714359-d032-4ed0-ae3f-cb82c8f65a92"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799715388515155968,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T01:45:42.868Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T08:03:12Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T01:47:50Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"3c13f747-6740-42be-ae5a-c3e3ea319f22","accessControl_ssim":["ab0efb3e-3667-4e5a-9abe-1613be7f5949"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Theological edification of laity through congregational singing in the Protestant Reformed Church"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T08:03:11Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T23:52:15Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["7695f4f4-a415-47df-8105-a94f1364bd54"],"hasLease_ssim":["d0977e96-a1fd-478d-ab60-0da3cec57900"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["San Francisco Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Daniel Hoggatt"],"year_tesim":["2003"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Mark R Griggs"],"publisher_tesim":["San Francisco Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Singing--Religious aspects--Congregational churches","Hymns","Music--Religious aspects","Church music"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["Many Presbyterian ministers claim that music has a profound impact on theological formation among laity, and that laity do not pay attention to the words they are singing and do not comprehend why a hymn has been chosen on a given Sunday. Pastors in three churches of different sizes and demographics in the San Francisco Presbytery were interviewed. Hundreds of pastors and educators from Canada and the United States were interviewed in groups.
