Up to 80 percent of new members of a congregation leave within the first year. Participants from seven adult new memeber classes at St Peter's By the Sea Presbyterian Church (Rancho Palos Verdes, California) met monthly for six months in homes of the class members.  The evenings were divided between basic Bible study and personal sharing. Many clergy wives experience God's love as real and believable in one's daily life.  A few women married to clergy do not experience authentic personhood.  The study identified programs, methodologies and strategies that were helpful.  One hundred-six clergy's wives responded to a survey instrument. Most confirmation experiences involve youth in early adolescence.  Yet studies indicate these same youth often 'drop out' of the church 3-5 years later.  Why?  This dissertation is an attempt to answer this question and seek an educational approach to help a confirmation experience be more effective.  The approach used is one developed by Christian educator Thomas Groome and is known as 'shared Christian praxis.' The research was intended to show trends and attitudes.  The study began with the premise that Southern Baptist theology and praxis holds a rigid view of divorce when applied to pastors and fails to allow for divorce for any cause other than adultery.  The research consisted of interviews, letters, questionnaires, books, articles, and tapes.  The study was limited to the preaching pastor only.  Respondents as a consensus offered little encouragement to the divorced pastor returning to the pulpit.  There was a strong indication that pastors in the Southern Baptist Convention are taking a more moderate view toward divorced persons in their congregations. The method of study was by interviewing twelve members bereaved through shocking death using a research instrument, and assisted by studies on post-traumatic stress disorder. Many academic-cosmopolitan ministers are unaware of the positive presence and contributions of 'local folks' in rural churches.  Only about two to ten perecent of USA adults are 'academic-cosmopolitans.' The author's research, interviews and personal experience suggest that academic pastors often do not relate well to locals who may be up to sixty percent of the USA adult population.
